Every Rhino Has a Story. Here Is How to Pick Yours

The best way to choose which rhino to adopt is to start with what matters to you: the stage of care you want to support, the species, the story that moves you, or the person you are giving it to. Every adoption goes into the same care and conservation fund, so there is no wrong choice.

Choose by stage of care

Care for Wild shows each rhino’s current status on its card.

  • New Arrival: recently rescued and needing the most intensive support. Havannah, Victoria, Abby and Nguni are examples.
  • Rehabilitation: calves in recovery, such as Hercules and RiRi.
  • Rewilding and Release: rhinos who have progressed to a protected wild setting, including Taro, Phoebe, Annie and River.

If you want your support to reach a calf at the most critical time, choose a new arrival. If you want a hopeful story you can follow for years, choose a rewilded rhino. The rewilded rhino guide explains what that support covers.

Choose by species

Care for Wild cares for both white and black rhinos. Black rhinos are critically endangered and need specialist care. White rhinos are listed as near threatened.

If you want to support the species under the greatest pressure, consider a black rhino such as Taro, Phoebe, Rato or RiRi. Our black rhino care guide explains why they are harder to look after.

Choose by story

Each profile gives the reason a rhino came into care. Some were orphaned when their mothers were poached. Others were injured, or lost their mothers to natural causes, like Havannah.

Read a few stories. One of them will stay with you, and that is usually the right choice.

Choose by occasion

Adopting as a gift for a birthday, school or memorial? Pick a rhino whose name or story means something to the person. Our gift adoption guide covers what the recipient receives.

What stays the same whichever you pick

Every adopter receives a personalised digital adoption certificate and quarterly updates by WhatsApp or email. Adoption is symbolic, and contributions go into the broader rhino care and conservation fund. You can adopt monthly or once-off; see our monthly vs once-off guide if you are unsure.

FAQs

Does it matter which rhino I choose?

Which rhinos need adopters most?

Ask the Care for Wild team. New arrivals need the most intensive care, but every rhino has ongoing costs.
