River's Story

River arrived at Care for Wild Rhino Sanctuary on 4th September 2014, just two months old and very scared, after poachers killed her mother in the Kruger National Park. Alone and unprotected, she had already faced further danger when lions had attacked, leaving her with deep scratches across her rump.

On arrival, Petronel and the veterinary team immediately attended to River’s injuries, cleaning and dressing the wounds while beginning the delicate work of helping her feel safe again. She was deeply traumatised, wary of shadows, and easily startled. For a long time, caregivers had to move slowly and cautiously around her. Gradually, with patience, love, and consistency, River began to trust again, and a cheeky, playful rhino personality started to emerge.

River was soon introduced to Tyson, another young orphan, and the following year, Annie joined them. River and Annie quickly became inseparable, supporting one another through the challenges of rehabilitation and forming a bond that continues to this day. Together, they navigated the essential steps of preparing for rewilding and release.
