New research from the Greater Kruger region shows that dehorning cut rhino poaching by 78%, making it the single most effective intervention studied. But it isn’t a complete solution on its own, and here’s why that matters.
What the rhino dehorning research actually found
A seven-year study across 11 reserves in the Greater Kruger region, published in the journal Science in 2025, tracked almost 2,000 poached rhinos between 2017 and 2023. Researchers led by Dr Tim Kuiper of Nelson Mandela University compared reserves that dehorned rhinos with those that didn’t, and found dehorning achieved a 78% reduction in poaching, using just 1.2% of the total anti-poaching budget across the study sites.
By contrast, the traditional tools most people associate with anti-poaching, armed rangers, tracking dogs, helicopters, detection cameras, accounted for the overwhelming majority of the roughly $74 million spent across those reserves, yet showed no statistically significant impact on poaching rates on their own.
That’s a striking finding for an industry that has spent decades investing heavily in reactive law enforcement. It doesn’t mean rangers, dogs, and surveillance don’t matter, they remain essential for arrests, deterrence, and protecting rhinos and people in the field. It means dehorning addresses the problem at its source: if there’s no horn worth the risk of poaching, much of the incentive disappears.
Why dehorning isn’t the whole answer
The same research is careful to flag two real limitations. First, some poaching of dehorned rhinos continued, horn stumps and the small amount of regrowth still carry enough value to attract poachers, and this appears to be a growing challenge in more recent data. Second, dehorning may simply shift poaching pressure onto rhino populations elsewhere that still have their horns.
In other words, dehorning works best as one part of a coordinated strategy, not a stand-alone fix, paired with rangers, monitoring, and community-based protection, which is how it’s applied across most of the reserves in the study.
How dehorning works in practice
A rhino is darted and sedated, and the horn is removed with a chainsaw or handsaw, taking roughly 30 minutes from sedation to recovery. It causes no more discomfort than a nail trim, and because rhino horn regrows over the rhino’s lifetime, dehorning is repeated periodically, typically every 18β24 months.
